Year End Luncheon

    The Monroeville Garden Club held their last yearly meeting May 8th, 2025, at the Monroeville Presbyterian Church.  This meeting was a delightful luncheon of delicious dishes provided by several gracious club members along with beautiful floral table arrangements.

     In honor of the theme “You Are My Sunshine” , each participating member provided their own table setting of wonderfully creative plates, cutlery, and chargers/placemats.  Each place setting gave testimony to the creative imaginations and artistic ability of our members!  Thank you, Charlotte, for such an inspirational idea and fun project!

     Business for the meeting was the payment of yearly dues and the announcement of next year’s officers:  President -Charlotte Lambert, Vice President- Laura York, Secretary-Sammye Long, and Treasurer - Faye Estes.  Thanks so much to these ladies for their time and desire to serve.

     After a wonderful hour of dining and fellowship, we adjourned collecting bags of daffodil bulbs donated by Bev Colquett.  We look forward to another year of great fellowship and gardening inspiration.

All About Butterflies

     On April 10, 2025, the Monroeville Garden Club met at the Presbyterian Church.  Hostesses were Jeanne Sewell, Dianne Bond, and Scarlet Strom.

     

Charlotte Lambert, President, opened the meeting by reminding members of the re-opening of the Bird’s Nest at the Courthouse Museum, the Bounty and Grace Banquet on June 12th (we will decorate the tables), and the May 8th Garden Club luncheon.  The theme for the luncheon is “You Are My Sunshine “.  Each member is to prepare a place setting of their choice and a favor.  Different members will provide food.  Club members were also encouraged to volunteer to be officers for the next year.

    

 Jill Boyles, Baldwin County Master Gardener, gave a very informative program for establishing and promoting butterfly gardens.   One main example of plants to use was milkweed, a host plant for butterflies.  We learned that the butterfly has a 2 week life span and somehow migrates to Mexico.  Ms. Boyles described the different attributes and markings of the Monarch Butterfly and others.  She also described the way the butterflies use their cocoons and how they emerge.

    

 The use of different plants was discussed.  Ms. Boyles recommended Kim’s Nursery in Citronelle as a good place to buy plants.  She said that the Alabama Butterfly Atlas and Youtube Lady in Daphne were great resources of information.

     

After an array of delicious refreshments which carried out the butterfly theme, the meeting adjourned.

Program on Container Gardening

  The Monroeville Garden Club met on March 13, 2025, at the Monroeville Presbyterian Church.  Hostesses for the meeting were Charlotte Lambert, Patsy Wadlington, and Carole Parker.

     The meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Lambert.  There was a short business session reminding members that the April meeting would have a program on butterfly gardens and that the May meeting would be a luncheon with each member responsible for a place setting and a favor.  Charlotte reported that Dr. Sage Smith had tilled the small grass area in front of the library in preparation for sod installation.  A work session at the library will be planned soon.

     Following the business discussion, Charlotte introduced our speaker, Doug Smith, manager at Frisco City Co-Op.  Doug presented a program on container gardening.  He recommended the formula of “thriller, spiller, and filler” for containers.  Large containers are best because this provides more soil.  Choosing plants for a container depends on sun exposure.  Containers come in various materials but wood containers can help buffer soil temperatures compared to metal or plastic.  Some recommended plants for the extreme temperatures in our area are pentas, trailing vinca, zinnias, verbena and asparagus.

     Doug brought each member an Angelwing Begonia and promotional items from the store.

     Following the program, members enjoyed a social time and refreshments of chicken salad and pimento sandwiches, toasted pecans, cheeseball and crackers, brownies and sparkling grape juice.

Program on Hydrangeas

       The Monroeville Garden Club met on February 13, 2025, at 1:30 pm at the home of Ree Smith.  Carolyn Hutcherson and June Herring were co-hostesses.

       Wanda Martin, a Master Gardener from Baldwin County, presented a program on hydrangeas.

        Following the program, members were served Poppy Seed Ham Rolls, Red Velvet Cupcakes, Cheese Ring and crackers, chocolate and strawberry cake balls, fruit kabobs, Heart Shaped Rice Krispie Treats, nuts, tea and water.
