Principles of Flower Design and Flower Arranging Workshop

 

The Monroeville Garden Club met February 9, 2023, at the Monroeville Presbyterian Church.  Judi Burns , hostess, along with co-hostesses Emilie Martin and Scarlett Strom, provided members with a delicious array of finger foods:  Chicken Salad Croissants , cheese and grape hors d’oeuvres, miniature cheesecake squares, chocolate covered strawberries, sugar wafers dipped in chocolate,  cheese straws, punch and water.  All were served with a Valentine motif on a table adorned with a gorgeous centerpiece of tulip tree blossoms.

Charlotte Hamm, a Baldwin County Master Gardener,  presented a very informative slide show and talk concerning the art of arranging flowers.  Members learned the principles of design which included balance, proportion, rhythm, scale, contrast, emphasis and unity, along with basic design shapes.

Buckets of flowers, greenery, and vases, to be used by everyone as each member designed and created her own arrangement, were placed on several tables.

After admiring each creation, the meeting adjourned.  Judi and Emilie delivered several of the arrangements to The Meadows to be used on their dining room tables. (Submitted by Sammye Long)

Program On Flower Arranging

     The Monroeville Garden Club met on Thursday, February 12, 2016, at 1:00 pm at the Monroeville Presbyterian Church.  Nancy Ziebach was the hostess.

     Mark Carleton presented a program on the mechanics of flower arranging.  He brought a number of containers and demonstrated the way to properly condition and attach floral foam before beginning an arrangement.

 Mr. Carleton favors the English garden design style of flower arranging.  This design uses loosely structured mass arrangements of mixed garden flowers.   Constance Spry (1886-1960) who was a floral designer and teacher probably had the greatest influence on the English garden design as we know it today.  Ms. Spry used flowers and foliage that were not usually associated  with flower arranging and combined wild and cultivated flowers in the same arrangements.  Mr. Carleton brought many types of greenery commonly found in the yard that could be used in arrangements following this design style.

 Following the program, members enjoyed refreshments of Chocolate Pound Cake with Whipped Cream and Strawberries, Miniature Cheesecakes, Toasted Pecans, Pretzel Candy Bites, Coffee and Punch.

  Attending the meeting were Laura Bodiford, Evelyn Bond, Sara Bradley, Judi Burns, Bev Colquett, Margaret Groves, Brenda Gardner, Dana Shinholster, Ree Smith, Nancy Ziebach, and a guest, Joann Shumack.

  The club will attend the Flower Festival in Mobile for the March meeting.
