Program on "Easy Care Gardening"

On March 14, 2024, the Monroeville Garden met at the Presbyterian Church.  Sharon Brewton, Jean Singleton, and Jeanne Sewell were hostesses.

President Charlotte Lambert called the meeting to order after prayer.  Present business concerning the grooming of the downtown area and the library was discussed.  Sign up sheets for different areas were signed.  We were thrilled to learn that the Co-Op in Frisco City would give members a 10% discount on plants if the member could recite the club motto.  We were reminded of a destination meeting next month to the Wildflower Bog.

Wanda Martin, Baldwin County Master Gardener, presented a wonderful program on “Easy Care Gardening”.  She informed and reminded us that the first rule of thumb for any garden is the correct plant zone.  Our zone is 8B.  When planting, a gardener needs to understand their soil characteristics, types of plants, plant size at maturity, water and food requirements, and when to “dead head”.  Lighting is very crucial.  We discussed full sun- 6 hours, partial sun - 3 to 6 hours, and shade - less than 3 hours of sunlight.  Different plants for different lighting were talked about and shown on a slide.  How to plant was discussed, as well as, how to fertilize and water.

Members were informed about the Baldwin County Master Gardener Website, a very informative tool.

We received information about the Baldwin County Spring Plant Sale which will be April 4-6 from 9 am to 4 pm and the Alabama Master Gardeners Annual Conference in Daphne, Alabama which will be April 22-24.  Registration is required.  The theme of the conference is  The Adaptive Gardener.  The registration fee is $160.00.

After the program, we were served delicious refreshments:  two different kinds of cupcakes (Coconut and Carrot Cake) which were beautifully decorated, fruit plate of grapes and strawberries, cheese straws, and chicken salad sandwiches.  A strawberry-lemonade punch and water were the drinks.  The table was decorated with a gorgeous flower arrangement.

The meeting was adjourned and all went home very knowledgeable and very satisfied. (Sammye Long)
